My Approach

"Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light." -- Albert Schweitzer

My approach is unique.  I see people as whole beings rather than disparate units that share rental space (the body).  There's the emotional/spiritual... the stuff that lies within.  And there's the physical... the stuff that is without or on the outside.  The middle ground, or the bridge, is food and meals.  Wellness is affected by all three of these things.  It's impossible to truly fix one aspect while neglecting the others.  We heal from the inside out.  We manifest on the outside what we have already made inside.

We've probably all heard the old saying, "As within, so without," which means we will manifest on the outside exactly what we live on the inside.  If we have chaos inside, we'll find nothing but chaos outside and that includes not only our experiences but our physical health as well.  Peace inside... peace outside.  The same can be said for wellness.  Wellness inside... wellness outside.

We see health within (i.e. health "inside") as the cornerstone to health without (i.e. health "outside").  If we have a physical condition like obesity, disease, or lack of fitness, it most assuredly has a match within us.  Our outside won't change until our inside does.  A healthy mind and spirit naturally increases longevity, resists disease, and creates a body that is receptive to fitness.

I have a 3-pronged, integrated approach to arriving at fitness of the whole person:

Wellness Within
Food
Wellness Without

Wellness Within encompasses our mental state, our outlook, our sense of purpose - basically the thoughts we think all day.  The quality of those thoughts is what determines our outcomes for good or evil.  The quality of those thoughts also figures in our physical health.

I see food as the bridge between the inner and outer world.  A meal is more deeply spiritual than many of us realize.  Dinner is a nightly ritual where we earth our power for the day, seek respite with our kindreds, and wind down from the day before going to sleep, where we float in the cosmic soup, the sea of potentiality.  Food isn't just a source of calories to sustain us - it is also a source of enjoyment and deep satisfaction.

Wellness Without is all about our physical states, our energy, and our resistance to disease.  It's directly affected by our state within.  Self-loathing creates bad habits like overeating, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, drug abuse, failure to exercise the body, etc.  Additionally, cells are damaged and even be killed by our own negative thoughts.
